On March 27, 2023, an American telecommunication company, Lumen Technologies, filed Form 8-K with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, revealing two cyberattacks, including a ransomware attack that impacted some of its systems. Lumen Technologies, situated in Monroe, Louisiana, offers an enterprise technology platform that combines networking, cloud, security, and collaboration services. According to Form 8-K, Lumen Technologies revealed that intruders deployed malware on its systems in two separate cybersecurity incidents. The first attack was a ransomware attack that compromised a limited number of the organization's servers supporting a segmented hosting service. As a result, a small number of Lumen’s enterprise customers suffer degraded operations. In the second attack, the attacker accessed Lumen’s internal information technology systems, then carried out reconnaissance, and malware deployment, and exfiltrated a relatively limited amount of data. However, Lumen states that these cyberattacks would not impact its operations or financial results. Furthermore, Lumen continues to evaluate potential responses to the ransomware attack, as well as assess the potential impact of both attacks, including if personally identifiable or other sensitive information has been exfiltrated. Lumen says that their priority is service restoration but will simultaneously investigate the cause of the attack. Also, Lumen ensures that necessary steps are taken to protect themselves and their customers from the effect of cyberattacks.
