The Canadian government is moving to ban devices like the Flipper Zero, citing concerns over their potential use by thieves to steal cars. The Flipper Zero, a portable pen-testing tool, is capable of experimenting with and debugging various hardware and digital devices, including RFID, radio, NFC, infrared, and Bluetooth. Videos shared online demonstrate its ability to conduct replay attacks for unlocking cars, opening garage doors, and cloning digital keys. Canadian Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced the ban following a national summit on combatting auto theft. Statistics show that around 90,000 vehicles are reported stolen in Canada each year, resulting in $1 billion in losses. Police data indicates a significant impact on the national Crime Severity Index due to motor vehicle theft. The Canadian government's Innovation, Science and Economic Development department intends to collaborate with law enforcement to remove such devices from the market. However, Flipper Devices, the company behind Flipper Zero, asserts that it cannot be used to steal vehicles produced after the 1990s due to their security systems' rolling codes. They emphasize Flipper Zero's intended purpose for security testing and development. Despite the government's stance, Flipper Devices maintains that the device has safeguards against misuse. Additionally, Amazon banned Flipper Zero sales in April 2023 due to concerns over its potential as a card skimming device, following actions by the Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency.
