As per reports, a cyberattack targeted the Canadian government's department in charge of international and consular affairs, disabling some of the government's online services but not its critical devices. GAC is the Canadian government department responsible for looking after international trade, the country's diplomatic and consular relations, and leading international development and humanitarian assistance programs. Authorities claim that on January 19, 2022, they learned of a cyberattack that affected the network of Global Affairs Canada (GAC) but had no effect on other federal departments. While the government has not identified the threat organization responsible for the hack, it is not the first time Canadian government networks have been targeted. The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador was targeted by a cyberattack in November 2021, disrupting the network of healthcare providers and hospitals.
