Fidelity National Financial (FNF) has officially confirmed a cyberattack in November, attributed to the BlackCat ransomware gang, which exposed the data of 1.3 million customers. FNF, a prominent American title insurance and transaction services provider in the real estate and mortgage sectors, disclosed that the incident occurred on November 19, 2023, and was successfully contained by November 26, 2023. The attackers utilized non-propagating malware to exfiltrate data from breached systems. The company's mid-December announcement revealed that stolen credentials facilitated unauthorized network access, prompting FNF to temporarily take certain IT systems offline, causing disruptions to business services. The subsequent investigation, concluded on December 13, 2023, determined that personal information of 1.3 million customers had been compromised. FNF has notified affected customers, state attorneys general, and regulators, offering credit monitoring, web monitoring, and identity theft restoration services. The breach was contained within FNF systems, and customer-owned systems were unaffected. FNF asserts that the incident will not have a material impact on its financial status and operations and commits to defending itself against potential class action lawsuits. While the BlackCat ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the attack, FNF did not confirm whether data was stolen. This breach is part of a series targeting the mortgage and housing industry, including First American, loanDepot, and Mr. Cooper. Among these, only loanDepot acknowledged a ransomware attack, while others have not disclosed details about the nature of the incidents.
