Description

Players of the popular video game series Final Fantasy faced difficulties logging in this week due to ongoing Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks targeting its servers with a significant volume of junk traffic. The initial attack on Final Fantasy 14 began on May 6th, 2024 and lasted over 24 hours, impacting players worldwide. Square Enix, the game's publisher, stated that it was "investigating the attack and taking countermeasures." However, the attacks resumed on May 7th, 2024, and persisted through May 8th, 2024, Wednesday, causing players to experience login issues and rendering some European, North American, and Oceanic data centers inaccessible. Square Enix has not attributed the attack to any specific hacker group. "Additional information will be provided as the situation develops," the company assured. Players took to platforms like Reddit to express their frustration. One player wrote, "I've been kicked out of the game a few times yesterday. I hope I didn't get any penalty for it." Another player complained, "Whenever I select a character, I get error 90002 and get kicked out. Throughout the entire day, I can't load any characters. All other things on my PC work perfectly fine, and all the troubleshooting stuff doesn't resolve the issue." Error 90002 typically indicates a connection issue or interference with the game's servers. The DDoS attack on Final Fantasy coincided with the upcoming release of the new expansion titled Dawntrail. While the expansion is available for pre-order ahead of its official release in July, concerns have arisen due to past difficulties experienced by game publishers during new releases. During the 2021 release, the number of simultaneous logins reached the hardware limit, causing user login problems. Gaming media anticipates similar issues during the upcoming expansion release.
