Description

Revolut, a well-known financial organization, was the victim of a massive security breach in early 2022, resulting in the theft of more than $20 million from the company's finances, according to sources. The hack, which is still unknown to the wider public, was carried out by taking advantage of a yet to be discovered vulnerability in Revolut's payment infrastructure. Inconsistencies between Revolut's US and European systems caused an anomaly in its infrastructure, resulting in the unintentionally refunding of transactions using the company's own money when certain transactions were denied. The issue was discovered at the end of 2021, but before it could be fixed, criminal gangs took advantage of it by staging a strategy in which consumers were encouraged to make high-value purchases with the expectation that they would be denied. As a result, the reimbursed amounts were taken from ATMs. Specific technical information about the problem is currently unavailable. A staggering $23 million was successfully taken, though some of the funds were recovered after extensive efforts to track down people making cash withdrawals. The neobank and fintech firm suffered a net loss of around $20 million as a result of this extensive fraud operation. Surprisingly, this revelation comes less than a week after Interpol announced the arrest of a suspected senior member of OPERA1ER, a French-speaking hacking group known for targeting financial institutions and mobile banking services with malware, phishing tactics, and extensive Business Email Compromise scams.
