A cyberattack targeting refrigeration systems has disrupted more than 115 supermarkets, grocery stores, and butcher shops across Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Luxembourg, Ireland, and Estonia. Attackers remotely manipulated freezer and cooling-system temperature settings, shut down refrigeration units, and activated defrost functions, causing temperatures to rise, damaging frozen and perishable products, and forcing store managers to take emergency measures. Affected businesses include ICA, Coop, Ahold Delhaize, Carrefour, Spar Colruyt, Intermarché, SuperValu, and Selver. At least 40 Ahold Delhaize locations, 15 Carrefour stores, 15 Intermarché stores, 13 SuperValu stores, and several other outlets reported disruptions. Some stores used refrigerated trucks to protect their inventory, while technicians disconnected affected refrigeration installations to contain the incident. The attacks reportedly exploited vulnerabilities in remotely accessible refrigeration controllers. According to refrigeration provider Sabcobel, the incident involved a vulnerability similar to one exploited in previous attacks in France. Earlier incidents affected Danfoss AK-SM/AK-SC and Copeland/Dixell XWEB refrigeration controllers. Securing these systems requires protected internet connectivity and, in some cases, physical modifications. Investigations are ongoing, and it remains unclear whether all affected stores were targeted in a coordinated campaign.
