Laboratory Services Cooperative (LSC), a Seattle-based nonprofit supporting reproductive health centers across over 35 U.S. states, has disclosed a significant data breach affecting approximately 1.6 million individuals. LSC, which provides lab testing, billing, and data services to various affiliates including some Planned Parenthood centers, detected unauthorized access to its network on October 27, 2024. In response, the organization engaged external cybersecurity experts and notified federal law enforcement. The investigation confirmed that a threat actor accessed and exfiltrated sensitive files, prompting LSC to publish a breach notice and notify affected parties. The compromised data includes a wide range of sensitive information: personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, Social Security numbers, and government-issued IDs; medical records like diagnoses, lab results, and treatment dates; insurance and billing data, including financial and payment card details. While the breach primarily impacted individuals who had lab work conducted via specific Planned Parenthood affiliates, LSC is not disclosing the identities of affected individuals due to privacy considerations. It is, however, providing a FAQ page and support line for those seeking more information, along with free credit monitoring and medical identity protection services, available for 12 to 24 months depending on the state of residence. For minors without SSNs, a service called ‘Minor Defense’ is being offered. LSC stated that no evidence has emerged—so far—of the stolen data being shared or sold on the dark web. Despite this, the breach represents the second major data exposure involving Planned Parenthood patients in 2024, following a ransomware attack earlier in the year. LSC’s investigation is ongoing, with continuous monitoring in place to track any potential misuse or exposure of the stolen information.
