Description

According to Microsoft’s announcement, its Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT) troubleshooters are being retired in the future versions of Windows with the launch of next Windows 11 release, as the MSDT app running them is being removed in 2025. These Windows built-in tools, also known as legacy inbox troubleshooters, are used to automatically diagnose and fix the problems affecting few Windows features. Moreover, while few of the MSDT troubleshooters will be redirected to Microsoft's Get Help platform post being retired, the remaining ones will be removed. Get Help troubleshooters can be accessed from Windows Settings by going to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other Troubleshooters and selecting the troubleshooter that would help address the issues. However, Windows 11 version 22H2 and older, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7 or any other earlier OS version, will not be affected by the retirement of MSDT troubleshooters, as they will keep working until the versions are upgraded to the latest release. Furthermore, even though Microsoft didn’t disclose the reason behind the removal of MSDT in future Windows versions, the possible explanation would be the vulnerabilities in MSDT which were patched in 2022 by Microsoft. These vulnerabilities, namely DogWalk (CVE-2022-34713) and the Follina (CVE-2022-30190), allow unauthenticated attackers to gain remote code execution on unpatched Windows systems.
