Microsoft has confirmed that the August 2025 security update (KB5063878) is causing significant performance issues on both Windows 11 version 24H2 and supported Windows 10 systems. Following the update released on August 12, users reported severe lag, stuttering, and choppy audio/video playback—particularly when using NDI (Network Device Interface) streaming in applications like OBS and NDI Tools. These problems are most evident when “Display Capture” is enabled on the source PC, even under low-bandwidth conditions, resulting in erratic streams, dropped frames, and desynchronized audio. The issue, marked as “Confirmed” by Microsoft on August 21, stems from a change in how NDI Receive Mode is handled post-update. The update inadvertently defaults the mode to RUDP (Reliable User Datagram Protocol), which causes excessive packet retransmissions under network congestion. This degrades streaming quality, especially for users relying on NDI for real-time video transfer across devices. Microsoft advises affected users to manually switch the receive mode from RUDP to TCP or UDP via the NDI Tools configuration panel or within their streaming software. This workaround has shown significant improvement in reducing latency and packet loss. Microsoft has announced that a permanent fix is being developed and will be released in a future cumulative update, although no specific timeline has been given. While the streaming issue has gained the most attention, an unrelated problem during the initial rollout also caused installation failures in enterprise environments using WSUS, which has since been resolved. Despite the performance drawbacks, Microsoft maintains that the August patch is a critical security update and encourages users to keep their systems up to date. For ongoing updates, users are urged to monitor the Windows release health dashboard and implement the recommended workaround if using NDI for live streaming.
