Microsoft recently admitted this month that the March 2025 cumulative Windows updates inadvertently remove the AI-based Copilot assistant on certain Windows 10 and Windows 11 machines. The problem occurs following the installation of updates KB5053598 (Windows 24H2) and KB5053606 (Windows 10 22H2), which were issued on March 11th. Although Microsoft confirmed unintentional removal of Copilot, it explained that the Microsoft 365 Copilot app is not affected. But Microsoft has not yet issued an official explanation for the flaw or entered it into the Windows release health dashboard, where known issues impacting supported versions are typically listed. As a workaround, Microsoft instructs impacted users to reinstall the Copilot app from the Microsoft Store and pin it manually back to the taskbar until a final repair is rolled out. This comes after a similar event occurred in June 2024 when Microsoft uninstalled a Copilot app mistakenly installed in April due to a buggy Microsoft Edge update. Then, Microsoft assured consumers that the Copilot app was not running and did not send data to its servers. The firm has also come under fire from Windows administrators after temporarily including Copilot in Windows Server 2025 preview builds, before later removing it following criticism. In spite of these missteps, Microsoft continues to develop Copilot's functionality. It recently announced a new native Copilot app for Windows Insiders, which can be accessed through the Microsoft Store. In addition, the firm rolled out a press-to-talk function, enabling users to communicate with Copilot through voice commands by pressing the Alt + Spacebar keys for two seconds. While Microsoft develops a patch for the latest bug, users can manually restore Copilot if necessary, although some might prefer not to, considering the mixed reaction to the AI assistant.
