Mint Mobile, a budget-friendly mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) owned by T-Mobile, revealed a recent data breach that may have enabled SIM swap attacks. According to notifications sent on December 22nd, 2023 unauthorized access led to the exposure of personal information, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, SIM serial numbers, and IMEI numbers. While Mint assured that credit card details were not stored and passwords were safeguarded with robust cryptographic technology, it remained unclear whether hashed passwords were accessed by the attackers. The exposed data is particularly worrisome as it provides ample information for threat actors to execute SIM swap attacks. Mint Mobile emphasized that customers need not take immediate action and established a dedicated customer support number specifically addressing queries related to the data breach. Although Mint did not disclose the breach's specifics, reports from July 2023 indicated an attempt by a threat actor to sell data allegedly stolen from Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile on a hacking forum. The data, a few months old, included the last four digits of credit cards, raising uncertainties about its connection to the disclosed breach. This incident follows Mint Mobile's 2021 data breach, where unauthorized access compromised subscriber account information, and T-Mobile's larger-scale breaches in January and May 2023, affecting millions of accounts. Resources has sought clarification from Mint regarding the attack details and whether hashed passwords were compromised, but as of now, no response has been received.
