Citizen Lab uncovered a spyware campaign known as “AdFection,” which used targeted online advertisements to deliver mercenary spyware without requiring victims to click an ad. The campaign targeted Al Jazeera devices during 2024–2025, with at least 45 devices identified as targets. Researchers linked the operation with high confidence to Candiru, a commercial spyware vendor reportedly rebranded as Integrity Labs. The advertisements were purchased through Discover-Tech’s advertising platform. The attack exploited real-time advertising infrastructure to identify selected targets using IP addresses, cookies, and mobile advertising IDs. Malicious advertising scripts contacted remote servers, which selectively delivered additional JavaScript and browser exploits to eligible devices. The resulting infection chain deployed Candiru spyware capable of covert surveillance. Researchers also identified security weaknesses in Discover-Tech’s Controlium platform, including exposed login logs and potential authentication-token abuse. The investigation highlights how legitimate advertising networks can be abused for targeted surveillance, privacy violations, and unauthorized access to sensitive information. Organizations should keep operating systems, browsers, and applications fully patched to reduce exposure to browser exploits. High-risk individuals, including journalists and media personnel, should use reputable ad-blocking and script-blocking tools. Security teams should monitor network traffic for suspicious advertising domains, spyware validator servers, and command-and-control connections. Block confirmed malicious indicators and investigate unusual outbound connections. Advertising technology providers should strengthen authentication, secure log-download endpoints, and audit third-party integrations. Potentially compromised devices should be isolated and examined by incident response specialists.
