Description

Hackers have breached the systems of Prosper, a U.S.-based peer-to-peer lending platform, exposing the personal data of around 17.6 million individuals. Prosper, which has facilitated over $30 billion in loans since 2005, detected the incident on September 2. While the company found no evidence of unauthorized access to customer accounts or funds, it confirmed that attackers accessed confidential and personal data through unauthorized queries in its databases. The compromised information reportedly includes names, Social Security numbers, government-issued IDs, employment details, income data, credit information, birth dates, home and IP addresses, and browser user agent details. Prosper has not yet disclosed the full extent of the exposure, stating that its investigation is ongoing. The company assured that free credit monitoring will be offered once the affected individuals are identified. Prosper emphasized that the breach did not disrupt customer-facing services and that it is working with law enforcement and regulators to investigate the attack. The data breach notification platform Have I Been Pwned revealed that the incident affected 17.6 million unique email addresses, though Prosper has not confirmed these figures. A Prosper spokesperson acknowledged awareness of the report but said the company could not yet validate the data. They added that determining the affected information remains a top priority. Prosper committed to transparency throughout the process and to enhancing its security measures to prevent similar breaches in the future.
