IDC Frontier, a Japanese cloud infrastructure provider and subsidiary of SoftBank Group, disclosed a ransomware attack targeting its IDCF Cloud service on October 07, 2026. The incident disrupted services in the East Japan Region 1 data center cluster, affecting 495 companies and local government entities. The provider isolated affected systems and suspended customer access to management consoles across all regions while investigating the intrusion and assessing the potential impact. The incident began at approximately 03:40 AM Japan Standard Time (JST) on October 07, 2026. According to IDC Frontier, unauthorized third-party access associated with a ransomware attack caused service disruptions, including virtual server shutdowns and failures to restart affected instances. IDCF Cloud provides infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), including virtual servers, storage, and networking resources used to host applications, websites, and business systems. The threat actor reportedly claimed to have encrypted 225 databases containing 3.6 petabytes of data, accessed 239 hypervisors, sealed 16,000 virtual machine disks, and deleted 554,153 snapshots. These figures are unverified attacker claims and remain unconfirmed by the provider. IDC Frontier shut down affected infrastructure to contain the incident and disabled management console access across its regions as a precaution. Investigations are ongoing to identify the initial intrusion vector, determine the full scope of compromise, and verify the security of other regions. No specific ransomware family or confirmed initial access technique has been publicly identified.
