In a recent 8-K form filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on January 18, 2024, VF Corporation, the parent company of renowned brands such as Vans, Timberland, The North Face, Dickies, and Supreme, revealed that over 35 million customers fell victim to a ransomware attack in December 2023. The American global apparel and footwear giant assured that sensitive data like social security numbers, bank details, and payment card information remained untouched, as such information is not stored on its systems. VF Corporation's preliminary analysis estimates that the threat actor pilfered personal data from approximately 35.5 million consumers. The company clarified that no evidence suggests the compromise of consumer passwords. The ransomware incident disrupted VF Corp's business operations by encrypting certain IT systems and resulted in the theft of personal data. In response, the company temporarily shut down affected systems to contain the breach, leading to interruptions in retail inventory replenishment and delayed order fulfillment. Consequently, customers canceled orders, and wholesale shipments faced delays. Although VF Corp has largely restored the encrypted IT systems, some operational impacts persist. The company believes the threat actor was expelled from its IT systems on December 15, 2023. VF-operated retail stores, brand e-commerce sites, and distribution centers are now operating with minimal issues. Despite ongoing investigations with federal law enforcement and regulatory authorities, VF Corp has yet to inform customers through official channels or disclose the nature of the data compromised. The company is committed to resolving the matter and has not disclosed any impact on employees, suppliers, resellers, or partners. VF Corp, headquartered in Colorado, boasts an annual revenue of $11.6 billion and employs 35,000 people, managing a portfolio of 13 globally recognized brands.
