Cybersecurity experts have recently identified the Ymir ransomware group as an emerging threat. Although they have not yet set up a public leak site, experts worry that they may do so soon, as the group may have been collecting data from victims. As data is collected, it may be released or sold, adding additional damage beyond the ransomware attack. According to Kaspersky, Ymir can be a widespread threat due to its use of information stealers as access brokers. Information stealers are malicious tools designed to harvest sensitive information, such as passwords and session tokens, from compromised systems. By using these tools, Ymir can quickly gain access to networks and prepare them for ransomware deployment. This tactic not only allows them to infiltrate systems more effectively but also enables them to collect valuable data to use in future attacks or extort victims. A particularly dangerous aspect of Ymir is its combination of data theft and ransomware. In addition to having their files encrypted, victims also risk having their private data exposed. This dual threat increases the potential for harm, as organizations could face significant data breaches in addition to the disruption caused by the ransomware itself. However, experts warn that the leak site will be launched sooner rather than later, despite no confirmation, yet. If the group starts leaking or selling stolen data, it could lead to a major increase in the number of attacks. As Ymir evolves, it remains a significant concern for organizations, especially as their tactics and reach expand.
