As per the reports Upahl, Germany factory of Denmark giant global dairy cooperative Arla Foods formally confirmed that it was hit by a cyberattack which disrupted production at its factory. Even though the company announced that the attack has been contained, it has led some shipment of products to be delayed and canceled, bringing inconvenience to distributors and also customers. Arla informed that suspicious behavior had been detected in its own local IT system, triggering emergency safety measures, shutting down production in affected plants temporarily. The other plant units were not affected by the attack, but the incident highlights vulnerability in the critical infrastructure of the food and beverage industry. Arla with annual turnover of €13.8 billion and presence in over 140 countries has an advanced supply chain. Upahl disruption illustrates how one-point cyber incident is able to spread across a multinational operation. While Arla yet hasn't decided whether the attack was an intrusion with the use of ransomware, the nature of the disruption and that it won't be sharing any further information shows a likely targeted intrusion. In a bid to prevent such risks in the future, organizations like Arla must invest in proper incident response planning, real-time network monitoring, and segmentation of IT in production environments. Cybersecurity audits, employee training exercises, and multi-factor authentication (MFA) must also be put into practice. Food sector actors must also interact with threat intelligence teams to track new cyberspam on critical services ahead of time.
