The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) and its El Paso counterpart were targeted in a cyberattack that disrupted their computer systems, potentially exposing the personal data of 1.4 million individuals. TTUHSC, part of the Texas Tech University System, is a public institution that trains healthcare professionals, conducts medical research, and provides patient care services. In September 2024, TTUHSC detected issues that caused temporary disruptions across multiple systems. An investigation confirmed that the disruptions were the result of a cybersecurity incident between September 17 and September 29, 2024. This breach led to unauthorized access to or removal of certain files and data from their network. A report to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services revealed that the breach exposed the personal information of 1,465,000 individuals. This data may include full names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, government IDs, financial account information, health insurance details, medical histories, and billing data. Impacted individuals will be notified and offered free credit monitoring services. TTUHSC advises those affected to be vigilant against phishing attacks, regularly monitor their credit reports and health insurance billing statements, and report suspicious activity to authorities. The cyberattack was claimed by the Interlock ransomware group on October 27, 2024. The hackers leaked 2.1 million files, totaling 2.6 TB of stolen data, on their dark web extortion portal. Interlock, a new ransomware operation, demands ransoms ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars depending on the target's size.
