CISA, FBI, NSA, and international partners have released a comprehensive security advisory aimed at assisting system administrators and engineers in safeguarding telecommunications infrastructure against ongoing attacks by the Chinese state-sponsored hacking group, Salt Typhoon. The advisory offers critical guidance on enhancing network defenses to mitigate the risk of exploitation by these threat actors, who have targeted vulnerabilities in telecom systems globally. According to the advisory, it is important to minimize the attack surface so hackers are less likely to gain access. In the United States, several major firms have been compromised in the recent attacks, including T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, and Lumen Technologies. The Salt Typhoon group has been active since at least 2019, targeting both government entities and private companies. A few of the recommendations addressed unpatched devices, secured exposed services, and improved the security of less-protected environments. The purpose of this joint advisory is to reduce the risk of further breaches by helping organizations to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities that could be exploited by Chinese hackers. These measures will strengthen network security and protect critical communications infrastructure from future attacks.
